The Programme:


The Smiths Detection Engineering Apprenticeship provides the perfect opportunity to join a high performing Engineering team. You will work with exciting technologies, develop expertise enabling you to grow into a highly capable multi-skilled engineer and gain great engineering qualifications.


You will be working as part of a team to provide technical support and expertise for all areas of the engineering function including, manufacturing and assembly, test, service on site and at customer premises, analysis tools, measurement, off line programming, process control, performance and continuous improvement solutions, capacity planning, production scheduling/planning, product technical applications and capability, product development and innovation, engineering drawing, purchasing and/or supply of goods or services for engineering activities, quality control, inspection and e-commerce technologies as required.


The requirements are designed to offer stretch, progression and exposure to all Engineering and Operational functions within the business, including:

 

  • Technical support to other departments e.g. Operations, Manufacturing Engineering, Technology, Service and Quality Assurance
  • Working with minimum supervision, taking responsibility for the quality, accuracy and timely delivery of the work undertaken
  • Being proactive in finding solutions to problems and identifying areas for improving the business
  • Supporting the development and maintenance of Explosive Trace Detection, X-ray, CT and Archway Metal Detector equipment

 

The apprenticeship programme will include:

- Day release at college to complete an Engineering Apprenticeship programme

- Rotation through the following departments to give wide ranging experience of Smiths Detection

  • Operations: In a production environment you will have the opportunity to work on multiple assembly lines where you will be involved in complex mechanical/electrical assembly and both manual and ATE testing, as well as learning core skills such as soldering.
  • Service: Including mechanical and electrical installation, commissioning and servicing of complex Imaging and Trace Detection systems at airports and customers sites
  • Quality: Develop an understanding of “Quality” in an industrial environment including management systems, continuous improvement and corrective action


On successful completion of the program the apprentices have the opportunity to join Smiths Detection in one of the disciplines above as an Engineering Technician. You will be trained to higher levels of competence and further education opportunities including ONC, HNC and BEng Foundation Degree.


About You:

  • Have at least 4 GCSE's at Grade C/Grade 4 or above (or equivalent), and must include Maths, English and a Science/Technology subject.
  • Hold a Level 2 Engineering qualification already.
  • Interested in becoming multi-skilled in mechanical, electrical & electronic disciplines
  • Desire to learn how to fault find on Trace detection systems, CT, X-ray, both static, networked and integrated to automated systems
  • Desire to learn to read and understand electrical and mechanical drawings, block diagrams and schematics.
  • Basic workshop/tool skills
  • Experience of working to Health & Safety standards and regulations or willingness to learn these
  • Able to prioritize in a fast paced environment
  • Willingness to learn new skills
  • Flexibility in working hours and shift patterns to provide cover for operational requirements You must be 18 years old before September 2019
  • You will need to have a clean UK driving licence
  • You must be 18 years old before September 2019
