The Programme:

The Smiths Detection Laboratory Scientist Apprenticeship provides the perfect opportunity to join a high performing scientific team, responsible for the development of new products involved in maintaining world class detection and screening technologies that protect people and critical infrastructure. You will be working with exciting technologies and developing the expertise to enable you to grow into a highly capable multi-skilled laboratory scientist whilst gaining a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry. This apprenticeship standard is recognised by the Science Council at Registered Scientist (RSci) level.

You will be working as part of a team to provide scientific support and expertise for all areas of Technology department projects, including instrument and experimental design, planning and execution of experiments, analysis of data, modelling, formulation and presentation of conclusions and report writing.

The requirements are designed to be stretching and offer progression whilst providing exposure to all scientific activities within the business, including:

  • Supporting the development and support of trace detection equipment.
  • Technical support to other departments e.g. Production, MED, Service, Sales and Programmes
  • Working with minimum supervision, taking responsibility for the quality, accuracy and timely delivery of the work undertaken.
  • Being proactive in finding solutions to problems and identifying areas for improving the business.


The apprenticeship programme will include:

  • Fully supported online study and summer schools with a nationally recognised institution
  • Regular visits and support to assist your apprenticeship studies from your support team
  • Tailored workplace learning
  • 5S and Lean Activities within the team.

About You:

  • You should possess a minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) - grades A - C including Science, Maths and English
  • Applicants must have a total of 80 UCAS points including preferably a B in A-Level Chemistry or equivalent. Alternative experience and qualifications may be considered
  • Interested in becoming multi-skilled as a Laboratory Scientist
  • Ability to manage own time and work with a high degree of autonomy
  • Desire to learn how to investigate scientific challenges
  • Excellent communication skills (written & verbal)
  • An awareness of working to appropriate Health & Safety standards and regulations or willingness to learn and practise these
  • Team player with excellent collaboration skills
  • Able to prioritise in a complex, fast paced environment
  • Willingness to train and learn new skills
  • You must be at least 18 years old before September 2019
  • The position is subject to satisfactory background checks and/or National Security Vetting as applicable
  • You will need to demonstrate ambition through work or educational experience and be able to give examples of how you have managed your own learning.
  • You will need to relish a challenge and be prepared to seize the opportunities given to you.
  • Hard work is essential as is a determination to succeed and make the most of the hands-on experience and qualifications on offer to you.
  • You will show self-motivation by providing evidence of your own achievements and the achievements of teams you have worked with
